Happy 2012 to everyone! Really exciting start to the year ... today I was named as 1 of 6 Scotland's "One's to Watch" in Fashion 2012 by Scotland on Sunday's Spectrum Magazine.

Looking forward to getting stuck into a new collection this year & making this year better than last .... however enjoying a little break right now with my beautiful little Twin Baby Boy's Freddie & Oscar who were born just before Christmas :-)

Quick post just to give you a little sneaky peek of a couple of dresses I made over the past couple of days for Christmas Presents. I'v had a huge response over on my facebook page where I posted the photos with no intentions of making these available and have had lots of requests for them. These plus a few more designs and colour ways will be available early 2012 as part of my little sister label "HS" by Hayley Scanlan which will provide more affordable garments yet still of the same quality and style as my other printed work. So apologies to all the girls requesting these at this point in time ... keep your eyes peeled for updates & for when these will become available.

A little delayed on my update's but things have been majorly busy for me...I must admit I don't have enough hours in the day to find time to constantly blog, but this is just a wee space for me to update progress on my work, nothing more! Anyway ... Just after I thought things couldn't get any better for me, I received a pretty AMAZING request the week before last. XFactor Stylist Laury Smith (who's work, I admit I havn't been the biggest fan of this series since she took over from Grace Woodward) emailed me requesting my collection for the XFACTOR FINALS for Little Mix to wear .... !! Excitedly I sent my collection off to XFactor studio's and watched to see if my collection would make an appearance, but sadly not.

The exposure would have been great for me but everyone will agree my work wasn't right for the look Little Mix were going for throughout the show. However, again, such a MASSIVE achievement for me to have been asked considering having only produced 1 Collection so far and feel extremely honoured to have been asked. Huge well done to Little Mix for winning (they were my faves all along) and I'm sure 1 day soon they will be wearing Hayley Scanlan!

Also I doubt I will post again before Christmas, so I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas .... Im looking forward to having the best Christmas EVER with my Twins about to be born within the next few days. What a great year ... lets hope 2012 is only bigger & better! x

Never been a fan of "Outfit Posting" blogs. Only because I don't get the whole dressing up, cringe worthy posing and taking photo's of myself kinda thing ... only a select few in the world (with amazing wardrobes/faces) can get away with it, I find them rather embarrassing to be perfectly honest ... but each to their own I suppose.

Anyway I thought I'd share this photo of my 5 year old niece Ruby in her Chanel-esque outfit at her 5th Birthday Party, in her very best "It's my party & I'll cry if I want to" pose. In my opinion Ruby puts all typically styled (YAWN) "fashion bloggers" to shame ... and she is only 5. Not only that, for her birthday I bought Ruby her first sewing machine which she asked for specifically to "make all of her own clothes" .... this 5 year old seems to have it all sussed. Beware of the next generation of Scanlan!

Lookk.com is a website offering new designers a platform to upload their lookbook to showcase and promote their collections to a panel of industry experts. This morning I woke up to the online first view of the full Versace x H&M Collection, something which I have been greatly anticipating since the moment I found out about this collaboration. Versace to me was the very first fashion house I fell in love with when I was a little girl back in the 90's... and the fashion house partly responsible for me wanting to become a fashion designer. So obviously the news of collaboration with one of my favourite high street stores was basically the dream collaboration I have been waiting for all of my life! Anyway, after drooling for months over recent adverts & sneak previews of the collection, this morning to my disappointment I noticed that a few of the garments advertised and of course the ones I had my heart set on were not listed in the full collection! However,most of the collection is of course amazing, affordable and if I could I would purchase the lot. None the less it is my ambition at present to make sure I get my paws on some of the pieces that I want, as lets face it, it might be the only Versace items I might ever get the chance to own ... check out the full collection here available in selected stores from 17th November ....... MAJOR news on the Hayley Scanlan front and a MAJOR achievement for myself ... I am very excited & proud to announce that my collection is now available & exclusive to super cool online boutique Stud & Stud!

Stud & Stud are an online boutique dedicated in supporting emerging new design talent. As you can see from the website the boutique are specific in designers they stock ... and more evidently you cannot deny the exceptional standard of talent among the list of designers stocking there! So when I was contacted by Stud & Stud, I was of course absolutely over the moon!! To be added to such an amazing list of incredibly talented designers who's work I have admired for a while - Simon Preen, Bordelle, Gabriella Marina Gonzalez and Tamsin Lillywhite (to name but a few) was extremely flattering for me. Even more so, this is the first ever official and exclusive stockist of Hayley Scanlan ... which of course is majorly exciting for me, a HUGE achievement and something of which I am very proud of.

Since the launch of my collection a week ago I have received some AMAZING feedback and am completely overwhelmed by the response. It's times like this when all the countless hours of non-profitable hard work pays off. Receiving positive feedback & criticism about something so personally directed is the best reward I could ask for at this current stage of my work. Even though this is the first step & only the very beginning, the encouragement is something I have very much needed recently to continue to push me to not to give up and I am sincerely grateful to everyone who has supported me, so thanks very much!

No idea why I have not posted this before but this is my current lookbook for 2011. All photo credits to Mr Ross Fraser McLean & Graphic Design by the very talented Mr Ivan Lee, who is also responsible for designing my logo (many people have commented on it, so just giving Ivan the recognition he deserves ;-) thank you to both of them & everyone else who was involved in the shoot.

I would also like to take this opportunity to update my current work/progress. Since I have graduated (2009) I have financially supported my design work myself. To all who are not aware the cost to make a collection is extremely expensive, hence the reason why I have only so far managed to make this current one since my graduate collection. Now that I am about to become a first time Mother of Twins in approx 3 months...gone are the days of nonchalantly blowing all my wages on fabric bills, materials etc to continue doing what I love. So what has happened is that in terms of pushing myself and taking my label to the next level (pregnancy or no pregnancy I have a pretty good ability to adapt to change) I have hit a brick wall as I simply cannot afford to produce a new collection. This for me is not only the most frustrating thing in the world but also exceedingly upsetting...especially when (for example) celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Beyonce or Kayne West can successfully produce collections at Fashion Weeks around the world,(Im not saying they are talentless but clearly money plays a MAJOR part in their ability to suddenly gain such a high profile platform to showcase their collections in their newly found creative careers) ... then there is I'm sure, many people like me who have studied, interned & worked hard for many years to sadly face the reality of possibly having to give up due to lack of funds. I'm sure if I had an endless pot of money or perhaps if I were ever fed by a silver spoon my current situation would be different. Anyway, my design work for my Spring/Summer 2012 Collection still continues as I speak, whether or not it will ever fully form into a ready to wear collection & lookbook for all to see is the uncertain question in hand. So...if I disappear for a bit this is my explanation ... however I can guarantee this will not be forever, where there's a will there's a way & no-one ever really gives up on their one true love, do they? ... It might just take a little bit more time for me to get to where I want ....

Of course its Fashion Week & due to my current circumstances (I am almost 6 months pregnant with Twins) I decided it would be best to stay clear this season. I have however religiously been following shows like I do every season wherever I may be and since her debut show at Fashion East in 2009 I have always greatly anticipated the work of fellow Scott Holly Fulton ... (forgive me Topshop blog I have pinched your images).

Yesterday I live streamed Holly's show and once again was not disappointed, her signature digital prints, chunky swarovski embellishment & slick colour palette were on true form....I was completely blown away. I want to wear it ALL (when Im bump free of course!) Holly has such a great vision & talent, definitely by far one of the best designers out there at the minute and I feel I can relate to her work considerably as our design aesthetics are similar & she is someone I definitely look up to as a young Designer starting out. Anyway you MUST take a look at the full collection here ... my favourite's - Look 12: the white & black printed shift dress with the turquoise fur trim & Look 23: the black, white & turquoise swarovski studded bomber jacket .. see below. Amazing!

Also looking forward to seeing my good friend Shaun Samson's first collection at London Fashion Week as part of the Menswear Fashion East show which is this Wednesday ... definitely worth a watch!

My last supplier has been cleared out (by me) & I'm desperate for more to produce a little capsule collection for this season due to selling out my batch of dresses inspired by the dress I made for my musical pal Marina (before they even went online for sale). Just a little update on my current works ... Above is some snaps from my shoot I done a few weeks ago with Ross McLean, today we narrowed down 600+ photos down to a good 36! So excited to get the proper snaps & will share them with everyone as soon as they are ready, which shouldn't be too much longer.

Right now I have a million & 1 things going on, so very busy (which is a good thing). Working on the Jane Bowler project at the minute whilst making a few dresses for different customers ... and also sketching ideas for Marina. Most importantly beginning work on my Spring/Summer 2012 collection which will be the first proper collection since my graduate work, I have lots of ideas up my sleeve ; -) Then ..... in between all that, trying to produce my 'Ice-Cream' collection of dresses that should be on the go within the next 2 weeks, in which I do apologise about the delay. Even better, with all this going on my sewing machine has decided to pack in too ... which is typical Hayley Scanlan luck.

However, no rest for the wicked!

Wella Trend Vision 2011

On Tuesday night I attended the Wella Trend Vision regional finals in The Grand Plaza Hotel in Glasgow. My sister Holly had entered for the first time (her entry photograph above) and I worked with her to style her model and make an outfit for her in relation to the trend brief set by Wella. Unfortunately Holly didn't make it through to the next stage ... which was ashame. Without being biased I think she should have, I know nothing about hairdressing but as an overall look in relation to her brief & trend forecasting in general I think she was spot on. However, it was her first ever entry in the competition and she isn't even fully qualified yet so high 5 for doing such a great job & getting to that stage, she totally deserved it. I do actually have a full length photo of the beautiful model Catherine (she is a fave of the Scanlan sisters ... I recently used her as my model too) showing off my dress in it's full glory, but it's not in my reach at present....but I shall post it soon. Having had a bit of a horrible week this week and very sick and under the weather....I woke up this morning to this, and it has certainly gave me the boost I've needed and put a smile back on my face! Marina Diamandis wearing my dress at the Esquire Magazine Awards lastnight .... also started designing her tour peices today, which Im so (overly) excited about!

Some people dont realise how tough it is in this industry when there aren't much jobs or work around especially in this current climate, but with hard work, determination, support & help from the right people around you, it definitely gets you through the tough times. People who don't believe in you are not worth the bother and I refuse to be let down or held back by them....onwards & upwards!

Jane Bowler is a recent Textiles Graduate from the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. Jane is known for her innovative approach towards textiles, highlighting her use of unexpected materials & processes throughout her collections. Since graduation, Jane's work has been photographed by the legendary Nick Knight (Wowzaa!) and appeared in Anothermag, Dazed & Confused, the BBC & Guardian online. I was contacted by Jane last week & am very excited to announce that I am to be working with her on some pieces for her new collection. Another busy & exciting week last week, yesterday had an a photoshoot with the very talented Ross McLean in the MOST AMAZING studio in the middle of the country as provided by Rory ... seriously it was only a month old, everything brand new ... it was actually like being on a film set! The shoot was for my lookbook & website which will be coming soon & I am very excited to show everyone how it went. It was a long day for everyone ... 9hours non stop but definitely worth it, thanks to everyone who was involved. Also started work on my Ice Cream collection last week, but have been held back for a bit since I ordered 4 colours in the wrong kind of fabric :-(

Oh!...and before I forget, my McQueen prediction for the Royal Wedding was correct ... and who better?! What a beautiful bride .... Congratz Wills & Kate! And nice work Sarah Burton ... long live McQueen!

Summer is upon us & it's time for Sunglasses to make an appearance (unless your mental & have wore them all year round!) ... and I think I have found my choice for summer. Well actually these have been the sunglasses choice of mine for a while...my friend Shaun actually owns a pair and I have had them on my face & yes it was difficult to part with them...grrrrr! These bad boys are Vintage 1992 Chanel Chain Shield Sunglasses & I randomly came across them on ebay going for a small amount that of course will allow me to purchase a couple of pairs .... and obviously the entire ensemble below too .................. Looks like Im sticking to my ray bans for now then .....

As of the next few weeks I shall begin designing Marina's tour pieces for Katy Perry's California Dreams Tour and I must say I have never been so excited in my life! Until then I have decided to throw in a quick little summer project after LOTS of enquiries about a dress I made one weekend for my Sister Beth's 21st. I have decided to design & make a collection of 5 dresses in a different colour (see the images in this post for my colour inspiration) & a different silhouette that will be available to buy online & in store at an affordable price. After the 5 sample dresses are sold the dresses will be made to order offering the desired size/colour/style to suit and will be available within the next couple of weeks....however there will only be a limited amount of fabric bought meaning it's first come first serve. So keep your eyes peeled in the weeks ahead for some ice cream coloured dresses coming your way!

Oh! Also would like to say a MASSIVE congratulations to my Sister Holly for her first ever entry getting through to the Wella Trend Vision 2011 Regional Finals! So excited for her & also to be working as her stylist for the competition too. And finally, thank you to my friend Jodie for helping me out :-)

Let me introduce to you one of my wonderful LA friends Miss Sky Ferreira pictured above on the cover of Wonderland Magazine photographed by one of my fave photographers Matt Irwin. Sky was the original 'dip dyed' hair queen (the overly done hair trend of recent times) ... when I met her back in 2007 at the tender age of 15 (however, I have to add it was completley natural.) Not only is Sky a total BABE she is massively talented ... making Michael Jackson cry when she sang for him & she's also written songs for Britney. This little LA girl is BIG ... but trust me, she is going to be even BIGGER!

Apologies for the delay on this post ... havn't had much internet access since I somehow managed to break my macbook on my return :-(
Anyway, as expected I had an absolute ball in NYC! We arrived on Friday so I had a couple of days before meeting up with the other designers for Dressed to Kilt. We pretty much walked all over New York City ... being jetlagged my Sis & Dad had been up exploring since 4.30am Saturday morning. We saw all the sights - Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge ... all the usual touristy things but the highlight for me was drinking a bottle of champagne at the Plaza Hotel in honour of Kevin McAllister (Home Alone 2 for everyone that don't know) ... best thing ever! I also had the pleasure of meeting up with one of my good friends from Dundee - little Rosscat & even more surprisingly one of my best friends in LA - Robzy, who was in NYC for 2 nights with work last minute & was weirdly staying 2 minutes around the corner from my hotel .... weird but brillant! I'm not really a fan of posting personal photos on my blog for the world wide web to see but here's a wee few ....

The Dressed to Kilt show was the main highlight for me (apart from the Plaza). Myself & eight other emerging Scottish Textile Designers were chosen to show in a new section of the show & were supported by Textiles Scotland who encourage the growth of success by supporting research & development, collaboration & innovation within Scottish Textiles. For me, being involved in an event like this & also been given the fantastic support & opportunity from Textiles Scotland has been amazing. Massive thank you to Stewart Roxburgh & Fiona Topping from Textiles Scotland and also the lovely Chris Hunt at Genuine PR for involving me...its very appreciative to know that there is support, encouragement & belief out there for new designers like myself. Also massive massive congrats to all the other talented designers in my section who were showing at Dressed to Kilt ... special high 5 to Claire McInally & Alan Moore who are not only extremly talented designers but who were also special top guys! The show was brillant & of course I was over the moon at the fact my jacket was used as the main pre press shot for the event (see my previous blogpost). However I was slightly disapointed that none of my new peices I had been working on were selected for the runway, but to even be involved is such an acheivement for me so I can't complain!

'New Designers' at Dressed to Kilt 2011 (Im wearing one of my own creations)

I also met some great people in the fashion industry including the lovely Tim Danser, check out his site Prince of Scots and also the write up on Dressed to Kilt he posted including a write up about my work here. Then of course the celebs who my sis spent most of the night with - fellow Dundonian & Hollywood Superstar Brian Cox, Paulo Nutini, Donald Trump & Keefer Sutherland. Top night with top people! Sadly for some reason we didn't even make the after party for the show .... en route my Boyfriend & I somehow ended up in the basement of a German Bar at someone(?) called 'Kenny's' 50th Birthday Party ...... No idea!!

Rounding it up though NYC really is an amazing place, had the best time with the best people and ultimatley I think it has given me the confidence boost I've needed to 'go for it' within working on my own label. Lastly I would like to thank everyone who has been very supportive over the past while, it really means a lot....even the local press (who not only used the worst possible photograph of me EVER, not only once but twice and who also managed to add a few extra arms & legs onto my story)... I am still extremly grateful for all the support & encouragment. Fingers crossed my work will continue to reward me with experiences like this in the future.

Just a quick little post to firstly apologise for my lack of blogging over the past 2 weeks .... as I sit here now (my wee five minute break) I currently have the biggest black bags (aka suitcases) underneath my eyes, 4 swollen sausage-style fingers (with multiple stab wounds, cuts...blahhh blahhh) and no fingernails or fingertips left ... all due to the fact that I am off to NYC tomorrow morning with my Dad, my Sis Holly & my Boyfriend John for a week.

Since I last found out 3 weeks ago that I had been chosen alongside 8 other emerging Scottish designers to show at Dressed to Kilt I have since then made 2 skirts, a catsuit, 5 dresses for the show & the pop up shop ... alongside 2 other dresses for customers. Thankfully it was requested by The Scottish Enterprise that I used my existing prints as it wouldve have pretty much been impossible for me to design a new print collection (that I'd have been happy with) to show. However, I have updated some shapes & also designed 2 new pieces to add to the collection which I suppose updates it.

Previous to this 5 minute break I've been finishing off a dress and I have some detail to finish on another & that's it completley finished, I still have to pack and have recently realised that I dont actually have anything for myself to wear to event....whoops! But I have 2 days before the event in New York to find something. Nervous & scared is a definate understatement but I am also so excited & still can't actually believe I'm involved in such an amazing event like this. I just hope NYC will like my work :-) .... fingers crossed.

Also, finally I would really just like to say a MASSIVE thank you to my Dad for helping me out, without him it would be impossible for me to re-make my collection for New York, having not received any funding for my work & committing myself 100% is not easy financially at all and without his constant help & support this wouldn't be happening to me ... so HIGH 5 B.Scanlan! And also thank you to everyone who has wished me good luck ... this seriously is by far the scariest thing for me to date!

So I suppose that's it until I return from the Big Apple ....... read more about the event here and this time I will not let camera malfunctions happen, lots of photo's on their way!

Apologies for the 'Marina wearing my dress' overload but it's all quite exciting for me ... even more exciting is the fact that I was mentioned on Perez Hilton's celebrity fashion blog 'Coco Perez' yesterday, which I still can't actually believe ... she does look pretty hot in it though even if I do say so myself.

On a more serious note, received all my fabric for NYC this morning, been cutting out my collection all day, in desperate need of a laser cutter to save me & my poor hands at least 2 days work (which a laser cutter can do in an hour) ... so its all go. Fingers crossed everything works out ok because it's not like me for things to go plain sailing ..... YIKES!!

Last weekend I received some VERY exciting news ... I was contacted by The Scottish Enterprise to submit my collection to be shown at 'Dressed to Kilt' a celebrity charity fashion show organised & hosted by Sir Sean Connery as part of Tartan Week in NYC!! Not only was I completely OVER THE MOON at this news ... better still, I then went on to find out I was also being taken to New York also to be part of the show!! The show is on April 5th at The Hammerstein Ballroom and is the highest profile Scottish event in the world and also one of the top 3 Fashion Shows in the world (no pressure!!) Above is the list of Designers featuring in the show (my names spelled wrong but not to worry...) and to top it all off my favourite Fashion Designers Alexander McQueen & Holly Fulton are also showing collections....seriously can't believe I am involved in such an amazing event like this, doesn't seem real at all AND I have also never been to New York before either and its someplace I have wanted to go since I was a little girl .... Never been so happy or excited in my life :-)

So having my typical spell of bad camera luck (went to take a photo on my first day and the camera was fully dead) and since I drowned my iPhone a few weeks back I unfortunately didn't document my London Fashion Week moments very well. The photo's above are Marina and I at the Look Magazine Show , I'm wearing a dress I made myself (the day before!) and Marina a dress by Hasan Hejazi .. Olivia Palmero was sitting a couple of seats along from us...Yikes! After the Look show we headed to Felder Felder which was more my kind of thing, the new collection is right up my street, lots of ink blue, emerald green, denim and embellished leather! Then to Bora Asku at Somerset House, quick costume change then onto Rankin and Vivienne Westwood's "Get a Life" party in Manchester Square which was AM-AZ-ING! Jessie J performed, many celebs ( my fave being Alison Goldfrapp wearing a pair of Charles Anastase Dungeon Boots I drooled over a couple of years ago....but in hot pink) .... and .... free cocktails, perfect!

My most favourite collection at LFW was once again Scottish Designer Holly Fulton .... I would actually wear every single piece, love it all! Followed Mary Katrantzou, Mark Fast and Felder Felder. Below are some of my fashion favourite's from Fashion Week ....

Yesterday I was locked in my studio with a pile of work, a giant bag of peanut M&M's (my Dads fault) and a heater that decided to blow up.....perfect. I was helping out my sister Holly with a project she is doing for work which I can't say too much about right now & I was using the new Lanvin campaign (above) for an inspiration board which I absolutely LOVE!

As you will agree 1970's is everywhere right now and I'm currently in the process of making a super slick 70's style jumpsuit for Marina (& the Diamonds) which Im very excited about! Anyway I was flicking through the March issue of Vogue when I came across an image of Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger. I remember when I was a little girl my Gran had a book and it had Jerry Hall on the cover and I remember thinking she was the most beautiful lady I had ever seen. However what I do not understand is WHY she ever left Bryan Ferry for Mick Jagger??!....Bryan Ferry is basically the Man of my Dreams (well apart from my boyfriend of course.....)// Love of my life, the singer of my fave band ever and he is also the coolest man on this planet... fact! He even let her be a Roxy cover girl, what more can a girl want?.....BIG mistake Jerry....

So yeh, basically I just wanted to share my love of Bryan Ferry, Jerry Hall and the new Lanvin Campaign .... Oh and also this editorial for Vogue Tokyo ...

I don't really ever follow the Menswear shows to tell you the truth but I do follow Nicola Formichetti's blog & his premier as Creative Director of Thierry Mugler yesterday at Paris Fashion Week caught my eye ..along with the rest of the worlds! ..... Mugler's A/W 2011/12 collection "Anatomy of Change" also featured a re-worked version of Lady Gaga's new single "Born this Way" and she herself stepped up as "Musical Director" for the show... WOWZA what a brillzo combination!

Not since the last installment of Harry Potter (obviously) have I been so excited to see a film .... this weekend Black Swan time is here & I'm so excited to see the amazing costumes designed by Californian Sista's Rodarte (one of my LA friends was lucky enough to intern for them in 2008...Wowza!!) Over 40 costumes were designed for the film and I can only imagine the beauty of them, every collection by Rodarte is a work of art in itself .. but what excites me equally is the amazing artwork for the posters (below) that have been clearly influenced by one of my fave art movements ev'zzzz - Constructivism. In my opinion already, Black Swan looks set to be high up on the list of most stylish films ever made .... I hope I am not disapointed!

"We at JUDE strive to establish a social change in the creative attitudes of the people of Dundee. We aim to do this through our quarterly magazine, online community and regular live events. JUDE will encourage and sustain local ambition by giving great exposure to all areas of talent in Dundee."

JUDE's concept is perfect...something exciting for fellow creatives in the city who are often overlooked....and something interesting & inspiring for the younger generation growing up in Dundee....I am also very proud to be involved at JUDE contributing to the Fashion Section of the Magazine and also helping out with JUDE events. I found this print in a folder on my laptop the other day, it was actually supposed to be for a 2m x 3m wallhanging as a back drop for my degree show...it took me bloody hours! The colours and the size hide the actual detail of the design which is ashame thinking of how staring at the mac screen for so long almost blinded me! Think it would work better in just monochrome though ... click on the image twice to enlarge (frustratingly enough you still can't see all the detail!)

Happy New Year & Happy 2011! This is my first (and first of many) post of 2011 ... a year in which I am am truly excited about! Like many I have a few New Years resolutions ... I set myself resolutions that are hopefully realistic and achievable, and I seriously intend to stick to them ... one of them being to regularly update this blog at least once a week! The rest are top secret until I manage to achieve them!

I have lots of exciting projects in the pipeline for this year and its all go as of next week (there has been a slight delay due to me being held captive by the nasty 'flu' bug that has held me back a week) ... however, as of Monday a revamp of my studio is about to take place! Photo's & updates will commence soon! So stay tuned for lots of new work & surprises from me in 2011 because I am back designing and ready to get cracking!

2 years ago when I was interning at i-D Magazine I came across a skin tight royal blue knitted crop top and INSTANTLY fell in love with it. I remember asking another assistant who it was by and he replied "Mark Fast" .... since then my infatuation with the designer began, one word - OBSESSED.

More to the point ... Never have I been SO EXCITED about a Topshop Designer collaboration ..... YES! This month (June 25th to be exact) MARK FAST releases a collection for Topshop!!! A signature 5 piece collection (see below) that I will actually be able to afford! So EXCITED!!! **Ok so now its actually available 7th JULY which is 2 days after my birthday.....Mark Fast Collection for my birthday....yes please!**

Charity Fashion Show

Lastnight in Dundee I helped out with a Charity Fashion Show with a Hair Salon my sister works in Blu Hair & Beauty. The team at Blu were given a section in the Fashion Show and dancers from Dundee College modelled and performed on the catwalk 3 different trends ... and it was my job to style the sections, being - Tribal, Boudoir & Sport Luxe. I was given a budget and had to source all the garments in Dundee ... which was a difficult task! For anyone who has never been to Dundee its borderline TERRIBLE for shopping! In the end I managed to source some things for the dancers...using my own work from my Graduate Collection in the Sport Luxe trend. In the end the hair by Blu, make up by Heather Chan together with the Clothes looked brillant, the Dancers however stole the show with their AMAZING choreography! My favourite part was when one of the dancers boob popped out my catsuit on the catwalk! Well done to everyone!

This summer though it is my mission to own all 3 of these leopard printed luxuries, a mission indeed ....

A question I usually ask myself .... "If Alexander Wang continually manages to produce my DREAM items time after time, why aren't we friends?"

The Golden Ratio

The concept of my final year project at University somehow managed to touch upon a variety of different subjects, subjects that I didnt even think could possibly relate. My starting point was a historical explorer ship in my hometown of Dundee - The Discovery. The general theme of voyages of discovery lead me to look at contemporary non-physical journeys within science & space. That then led me to analyse the super-symmetry theory of the Large Hadron Collider which then lead me to question symmetry in the human face. The Golden Ratio is a theory used by Steven Marquardt in which he claims that he most beautiful faces in the human race are perfectly symmetrical and fit the mask’s decagons and pentagons most closely. He has applied this theory extensively to celebrity faces and uses it as a reference point in his plastic surgery.

Super Symmetry = Broken Symmetry ... And using this theory I began to take polaroids of some of my friend faces asking them to "break symmetry" within their facial expression. I produced a collection of geometrical drawings of my friends faces (above) from the polaroids in which I developed & designed into a collection of various digital prints and fabric samples. The face used in these drawings and prints is that of my friend Chris Dalglish & my sister Holly.

Below is a dress I made for a customer last week. It is digitally printed using "The Face"print (Chris) and is exactly the same as the Pistachio Green dress from my degree show collection except its on graduated Pink instead of Pistachio, it is then hand foiled in metallic Gold and finished off with Silver dome studs (which made my fingers bleed!)....All worth the "blood, sweat & tears" though ...

unfortunatley the only photos of this dress were taken on my phone as I managed to break ANOTHER camera recently, although you can see the full effect on the Pistachio one below....

Never in my life have I been a girl interested in grooming my nails .... Firstly because nail files make me sick to my stomach (one of these weird phobias people have - mine is nail file's & sandpaper...eeeeeekk!!!) Secondly due to me constantly making things with my hands that cause my fingers to bleed, nails to snap & peel surely wouldn't do beautifully groomed nails any favours and thirdly Im just not that girl type! HOWEVER .... coming across "WAH Nails" has totally changed my opinion about having my nails done.....

Wah Nails is of course a Nail Salon minus the "WAG" girls stereotype that comes with most nail bar's, situated on Kingsland Road, Dalston in East London. Opened by Central St Martins Graduate & Stylist Sharmadean Reid WAH Nails sure knows how to bring in the cool girls, with concessions now open at Topshop (Oxford Circus) & Selfridges....I know where I'll be heading next time Im down...hopefully without a nail file in sight!

Last Christmas I received this Sterling Silver Skull Ring (above) by Jewellery Designer Stephen Einhorn ... without a doubt my favourite Christmas present. However....only a couple of weeks later I came across these Alexander McQueen Skull Rings which to be honest made me wish I had discovered them just a wee bit earlier. My Sister then went on to purchase the Gold Bee Skull Ring after Alexander McQueen sadly passed away, but truth be told, in real life the ring is actually x10 more amazing than the photo suggests....if that could be possible?

So, last week during my daily drooling session on Browns.com I discovered the Silver Bee Skull Ring and decided I was going to become the owner...then as per usual my luck lets me down when only a size Large is available...something my long, skinny, witchy fingers just wont be able to handle. Anyway, I am not giving up....

In a dream world I would have a Skull Knuckleduster for every single one of my witchy fingers on both of my witchy hands .... HOT!

Recently I have pretty much abandoned this blog due to being occupied with other things in life that are keeping me happy :)

However, I think its time to get back into things including new design work. My most recent inspiration and obsession is the work of the late NY Pop Artist Keith Haring. I became familiar with the work of Haring when I worked for Jeremy Scott back in 2007, after seeing the collection of his collaborated Adidas Hi-Tops, which I fell in love with. Always being familiar with his work I decided to look into it with more depth. In 2008 Jeremy's "Let Them Eat Gas" collection included a "Keith Haring" inspired printed Schott leather jacket which again, something else I fell in love with...unfortunately I did not have a spare £3000 to purchase one.

Anyway, most recently...after seeing Rihanna's "Rude Boy" video I then became obsessed with the white "Haring" inspired Catsuit she wears whilst riding on a Zebra which led me to try to involve the style of Haring's work within my own prints, a difficult thing to touch upon when trying to make it as my own as his work is so distinctive to his name, but unless someone would like to send me Rihanna's catsuit or Jeremy's jacket I have no choice ... I need some Keith Haring inspired prints in my life ASAP!!

This season I was a bit gutted not being involved in Fashion Week...especially when it comes to Jeremy. Still after all this time he never fails to surprise me with his new collection each season. Showing in NY this year and due to lack of funds it was impossible for me to go....so photos (stolen by Mark the Cobrasnake) just had to work as a replacement. R.I.P Alexander McQueen

Like many others I was deeply saddened and shocked by the death of Alexander McQueen a few days ago. McQueen was by far one of the most fascinating Fashion Designers of our time never failing to truly impress, excite or inspire me as Im sure many others. The world of Fashion has truly lost one of it's best, a true genius....R.I.P

The small collection of prints (below) came from this drawing above which I done last year. I never really liked them at the time but its funny how when you look at something that you havn't seen in a while and it changes your thoughts. Im still not overly in love with them, but I feel they can be worked on and developed. I have lots of ideas for a new collection and now im back in the studio I cant wait to get stuck in again and become lost in work....I'v realised after having a break that it really is the only thing in the world that makes me truly happy :)

STOLEN WORK :(

This Friday I was supposed to head down to London for two extremly important interviews....so today I decided to go through my portfolio, tidy up a few things and just generally make sure everything was looking spot on. After going through things a few times, I had a strange feeling that something wasnt right, I then noticed that my favourite (might I add IRREPLACABLE) piece of work from my portfolio was missing. A sinking feeling hit me when I realised that not only 1 piece had gone missing, but lots more. Drawings which were the basis and beginning of my ENTIRE PROJECT and Print Design Samples that were my favourite and best pieces of work....completly GONE.

Now I am not the kind of person to point the finger and accuse in any situation, because I believe I am a good trusting person and like to believe others are too, but there is no other explanation in this situation for my work going missing apart from it being stolen...which really seriously has upset me.

I cannot understand or come to terms with as to why someone would want to steal anyone else's work. The heartless person however, was clearly a fan and has good taste as not only have they picked my favourite work, but they have went through it carefully and handpicked a small collection of drawings and designs that make a rather nice combination...very clever....I hope that out of all the upset and inconveinence you have caused me that I have provided you with some enjoyment.

The last place this work was seen was at The Zombie Porn Factory exhibition in Glasgow in August, unfortunatley I wasn't in attendance because of my broken hand, but fully trusted my work to be in safe hands and looked after. Anyway, these photos I have added above and below are only a handful of pieces that were taken. The original drawings (above) along with other pieces will have to try and be done again, but the print design samples can be replaced. If anyone comes across these or has seen them I would be thankful if you could get in touch with me. Im not sure whether they were stolen to be used/copied or just out of sheer nasty-ness, whatever the reason it was such a heartless, horrible thing to do and I really honestly pity the person who has had to stoop so low to recieve attention and do this to me.

Now I just have to crack on and produce more work to build up my folio again which shouldn't be too much of a problem, it has just totally shattered me to know how much hard work and time went into it.. for some cold hearted idiot thief to come and take it away. In the end I feel whoever the fool may be, thank you for doing me a favour and pushing me to go on and produce more work that may be so exciting that it would be worth stealing. Quite flattering if anything...

Oh!...and I happen to be a great believer in Karma...so I'm sure you will be repaid for this one day.

Walk Walk Fashion Baby...

I know I have already blogged about Lady Gaga in the past and her amazing outfits in her videos...but "Bad Romance" is so amazing its actually changing my opinion on Lady Gaga herself....I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! The outfits/styling in this video are absolutely fantastic...then when I discovered Nicola Formitchetti had styled it, it all made sense! My favourite is without a doubt the Plato's Atlantis outfit by Alexander McQueen (something I have also previously blogged about)....MIND-ACTUAL-BLOWINGI Anyway, I know lots of people have different opinions about Lady Gaga, in mine I do think she is bit nutty but to have so many famous designers/stylists/artists wanting to work with her, she must be doing something right!

This month I have teamed up with my friend to bring a one off night - Neon Nights vs Smash'n'Grab special Halloween Party! Of course its strictly fancy dress and not only that the best dressed (I am the judge) will win a 3* trip for two to London so make sure you dress to impress. If you read my previous post, you'd have known I was commissioned to design, style and make an outfit for a model for The Wella Trend Vision Finals 2009 for Hair Stylist Michael Howie at McIntyres Hair Salon with the brief entitled "Another World". Sadly Michael never won...but hey you know what they say..."Everyone is a winner!" Especially when your entry is looking hot like this..

P.S The photo's dont show the bodysuit in its full glory I must say, there were over 1100 swarovski crystals, 100 spiked studs and silver mirrored foils embellished over one of my printed fabrics from my degree show collection with some black leather fringes on the arms. However I am about to shoot a new look book soon that will show the real detail of it...Anyway well done to Michael, I think you did an amazing job!

Givenchy Monochrome Magic

Colour to me is one the most important elements within my work...I remember completing a Monochrome print project whilst at University and I struggled...I feel colour brings life into anything and felt my work looked boring, dull and flat. Givenchy on the other hand has changed my mind with their Spring/Summer 2010 Collection. I am currently working on a capsule collection for Spring/Summer 2010 for a special online shop (all will be revealed in due time) and due the expense of the digital printing process (what I usually specialise in) Im going to keep things simple/less expensive and go back to Screen Printing and try out some Monochrome Magicalness...if I can handle it!

Every year Spring/Summer Ready to Wear Collections always seem to get me a tad more excited than Autumn/Winter, however this year I havnt been much impressed.....UNTIL YESTERDAY when I saw the Alexander McQueen SS10 Collection....OM-ACTUAL-G nothing has (in a very long long time) got me quite excited as this!
